CANON: Ace Attorney

PERSONALITY: In many ways, Dick Gumshoe is as straightforward as one would expect a detective named Dick Gumshoe to be. He's a warm and friendly person, who often speaks casually and has a tendency to frequently refer to people as "pal". He is a hard worker who can be very eager to help others. Because of that, he often gets stuck with odd jobs in addition to or in place of his police work, such as making the Dancing Blue Badger. This dedication is amplified when it comes to Miles Edgeworth, as Gumshoe has been known to regularly clean his office and practically acts as his butler. His demeanor in serving others often depends on who he's working for; while he respects Edgeworth, he instead tends to fear Franziska von Karma and the whip that she wields, and so he is much less enthusiastic when doing work for her.

His self-esteem levels can fluctuate dramatically. He's capable of being brash and overconfident, and he will taunt others when he thinks he's in the lead. However, while Gumshoe has some smarts, he is also not especially bright and often tends to speak or act without thinking. He's also somewhat clumsy. With all of those factors combined, he will often end up arresting the wrong person and/or making some mistake in his investigation or testimony, which tends to get thrown back in his face in court. While he prefers to paint his dynamic with lawyers like Phoenix Wright in a more favorable light such as that of hot-blooded rivals, he actually comes to dread testifying in court, because he knows something will be objected to. This can make him somewhat jumpy and nervous. On top of that, his failures result in him receiving pay cuts, and so he has ended up living a very low-income style. This can cause him to be act very defeated at times. At the same time, he's become accustomed enough to his lifestyle that he often tends to regard it in a casual manner, and to treasure every improvement that he can come across, such as winning an air conditioner in a lottery.

The detective can tend to have a somewhat childish and simplistic view of things. Even after becoming police detective, he tends to view his job in a romanticized way. His style and appearance reflects his attempt to live up to the image of a hard-boiled detective. His romanticized view is best expressed through his view on guns. Gumshoe actually hates guns and avoids using it at all costs, though he claims he would love to use it in a dramatic showdown with someone atop a moving train. This seems to indicate that he only likes guns in a fantasized type of way, in situations that one would usually only find in action movies, rather the reality of wielding a gun. It should also be noted that he once irresponsibly offered to let a child hold his gun as an attempt to comfort her, which is easily among his stupidest suggestions. But afterwards, he showed himself to be better at dealing with kids and managed to help the young Pearl Fey on several occasions.

Furthermore, he has been known to idealize some figures in his life, although recent events have started to shake him out of that. His mentor was Detective Badd, who Gumshoe looked up to as a genuinely tough detective. But it ultimately turned out that Badd had committed some crimes, and he had Gumshoe arrest him after confessing, as he felt that it was necessary for Gumshoe to face this. Additionally, there's his dynamic with Edgeworth. Gumshoe is fiercely protective of Edgeworth and dedicated to serving him. He tends to see them as an unstoppable super-term. However, recent canon events have resulted in Gumshoe working separately from Edgeworth on several occasions. While this saddened him, it has also helped him to begin growing to be more independent, so that he will not always rely on being part of a dynamic duo with Edgeworth.

ABILITIES: He has a police training and is fairly strong. He also has some skill at putting things together, as he made a makeshift bug sweeper as a child.
PERSONAL EFFECTS: A gun that he never uses, also a cell phone and a magnet in one his pockets.
PRIZED POSSESSION: A newer and cleaner trenchcoat of his, which was recently purchased for him by Maggey Byrde at the end of Trials and Tribulations.
